As the dust settles on the results of the midterms, there's no question that Democrats did very well nationally and exceptionally well in Washington State.
For a complete summary of the key races, scroll to the bottom.
In the State Senate Democrats will gain 2 or more seats, and in the State House we'll gain 7 or 8 seats, making the new Dem majority 27-22 in the Senate and 56-42 in the House. Wow!
And those margins could well grow in the coming weeks: they don't include 4 additional possible pickups for Dems, four races which are still too close to call. In 3 of these additional possible pickups, the Republican and the Democratic candidate are less than 100 votes apart! (All four are previously Republican seats.) So stay tuned.
But now: a big high five! Democrats finally will have the leverage to pass progressive bills on clean energy, gun safety, and school funding. Woo!
Looking forward, the path to an even deeper blue Washington is in sight. We'll need to keep our eyes on this prize in order to truly fix our toughest nugget of all: a fix to our state's unfair, regressive tax structure. We’ll need even bigger state progressive majorities than we just gained to overcome major blocks to raising taxes on the very rich and on corporations.
But don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. We won big this past week. So stick with Friends of Washington, and we'll continue to help you stay informed, to help us win even bigger in the next round.
See below for a summary of the key races.
