Hello Friend!

In the era of Covid-19, it’s more important than ever for Democrats to be able shape the future of Washington State. That’s why Friends of Washington is back:  we’ll keep you informed on how you can take action to keep progressive change going in our state, focusing on important, winnable State Senate and State Rep races.

TO LAUNCH OUR 2020 COVERAGE: FEATURED CANDIDATES FOR STATE SENATE

Helen Price Johnson (see info below)
T’wina Nobles (see info below)

OUR TOP TWO FLIP (R) to (D) STATE SENATE SEATS ARE:

Helen Price Johnson

10th Legislative District (Whidbey, Camano, South Skagit)

Johnson, an Island County Commissioner, is a strong supporter of affordable housing and the environment. This seat was vacated last fall by the retiring Barbara Bailey (R).

How to take action: Volunteer or donate here

T’wina Nobles

28th Legislative District (Tacoma and suburbs to its south)

Nobles is CEO of Tacoma’s Urban League, a school board member in the suburb University Place, and a military spouse. She is running against conservative incumbent Senator Steve O’Ban. This is the same promising district that Mari Leavitt (D) flipped for the house in 2018. This is going to be a tough race: the Republican party is spending lots of money to defend their seat, but Nobles has savvy, great communication, and decades of experience in education and service to bolster a growing Democratic base in the district.

If it seems early, there are only 6 short months until ballots arrive. Now is the time to support these campaigns. Even a little money makes a big difference in a state senate race, especially when given early (now) as candidates build their teams. To remind you of just what’s at stake, and how much your support for these races matter, here is a recap from 2018.

HERE'S WHAT WENT DOWN IN 2018

The 2018 WA State election cycle was exceptional! Several races were decided by less than 0.01%. Without a doubt our donations made a difference, especially those directed to candidates sent outside our own districts.

In WA State Senate: we flipped 3 seats to Dems (Dem majority now 28-21)
In WA State House: we flipped 7 seats to Dems (D majority now 57-41)

WHAT THIS GOT US: (Major bills passed in past 2 years)

  • Funding for K-12 schools has increased by 50% (E2SSB 6362)

  • New grants created for free college for low-income students (E2SHB 2158)

  • We are the first state to provide a public option health care plan (SB 5526)

  • We were able to pass Jay Inslee’s nation-leading clean energy bill (SB 5116)

  • New law passed blocking guns sales to domestic violence abusers (ESB 6298)

LOOKING AHEAD: While we made big progress, we have a lot of challenges ahead. With our economy in free fall, we'll need a bigger margin to help us recover from the coronavirus pandemic, and to finally get to the toughest nugget of all: fixing our state's regressive tax structure.

Please donate financially what you can to the above candidates, but also consider donating your time. In this stay-at-home era, we’re all local. These races will be won by the candidate who is most effective getting out the vote with phone banking, and our candidates’ call centers can always use you.

And lastly, thank you for sticking with Friends of Washington! We'll keep you informed on our path to Election Day 2020 and your options to ensure that we Make Washington Ever More Blue.

Sincerely,
Your friends at Friends of Washington
